Well, the narrator of the story is a marine biologist, and so the novel has some quite lengthy and vividly described scenes of underwater sea life told from his perspective as a marine biologist. In fact, the editors of the abridged version of the novel found these scenes to be too lengthy and too detailed that many of them were cut out in the abridged version X)
