First I filled a bowl with dish soap and water, and plopped in the locomotive and it's tender. Next I brushed off all of the marine growth and weeds with an old toothbrush. (Make sure you set aside a separate used toothbrush, and don't leave it in the bathroom where you might accidentally brush your teeth with it. I made that mistake once, and ended up with a mouthful of mud). Once this was done, I let the locomotive and tender dry on a paper towel. The train hadn't been on the bottom of the lake long enough for its axles to rust, so I didn't have to drill it apart to replace them. I just added a bit of oil to prevent future rust and keep its wheels rolling smoothly. Next I used model paint to cover over chips in the locomotive's paint work, and repainted its eyebrows. I let the paint dry, then waxed and polished the train to a bright finish.
Although a mediocrely detailed children's toy, I was overjoyed by this find, especially since I am a model railroader. The train now has a spot of honor on my display wall.
Have you ever found or lost a toy in a lake, river, or the ocean? If so, reply in the comments.

I ended up losing my Take N Play Skarloey and a few cars in a small pond. I was remaking the episode "Duncan gets spooked" with them on an old truss bridge over the pond.
A while later the pond dried and I was able to recover them. Skarloey had some paint missing, but I was happy to have him back.
