Rats are born survivors - hearty, scrappy, resilient and resourceful. They would normally live to ripe ages were it not for a well-earned reputation for bad luck, or rather for attracting bad luck. Unlike other species that seem gifted with grace or natural charisma, rats always seem to collect scars, misfortune wherever they go; most die by the hands of others.
Perhaps this misunderstanding comes from just how blessed they truly are. In the midst of plague, rats are the least afflicted. When ships sink and all others drown, a rat or two usually manage to wash ashore, soaked but alive. They tend to thrive in the worst of environments, through famines, wars, revolutionary upheaval, witch hunts, and other calamity. And so it might seem to others as though they live under a cloud, or in league with dark forces.
The truth is that they suffer as much as the next person, yet with innate stoicism and a knack for recovery from the worst injuries - mended but not unscarred. Their adaptability makes them excellent in many fields, though they are generally too rough around the edges to make it far in polite society. Most are well-travelled, though usually as outlaws or corsair pirates; a respectable crew would toss a rat overboard than invite disaster.
As a result, rats that succeed in life are usually the ones in charge, or are self-made people, wearing their status as a provocative badge of honor. One rat might even affectionately refer to another as "vermin" or "varmint" as a sign of recognition, even when the word is taken as an insult from other non-rats.
As infants, rats can pass as other rodents, leading to old wives tales of kidnapping or baby swapping, prince for pauper, as a means of social climbing - but these are undoubtedly romantic fictions.

This is quite wonderful....I've had pet rats since I can remember and I think that, were they gifted with speech, high(er) intellect and a society they'd be just as you describe them. Scarred survivors and jack-of-all-trades but too rough for high society.
If only you offered prints, my mom would adore this.

Lustrous coloring on this one! Fine little details like the scrawled design on the pistol holsters and the little reflections off the cutlass hilt and the earring. Was this inspired by some of the Wyeth illustrations for Treasure Island? And how did you get that sparking fuse effect so right?
Also, rats are smart enough to have already discovered several back door escape routes and hiding places in case plans go awry. What would happen if a coyote and a rat teamed up in this universe? The knave and the trickster...
