I once heard that some hockey players knit to keep their fingers nimble.
(in particular, I think it was somebody's goalie)
I've actually made myself an afghan once, but it took so long I haven't tried to do it again.
I also have pillows I made covers for, and even a bag at one point (which didn't do a very good job of holding).
