This is actually the first time I've drawn Splinter fanart based on the classic 1990 live-action movie. He's rather underappreciated nowadays, and it was fun to add another version of Splinter to my growing collection.
( Edit: Replaced the file with a slightly less dark version. )

Thanks! It's fun when the background tells a little story or two. I was going to add more background detail but kinda ran out of ideas and steam towards the end.
( By the way, does the scene look too dark on your browser? It looked fine when I worked on it, but I'm not sure if I should brighten it up a touch for the web version. )

I've seen a few different variations in the reference pics I gathered ( from the first two movies, and some toy miniatures ), and I think I used a darker base tone in the original rough concept for this illustration. But since the background and fur tones are dark, I figured the robe could provide a little more contrast. I did want the overall scene to be fairly dark, to go with the style and lighting of the first movie.
Ah, I guess you're too young to know the original Turtles movies. ( On the upside, there's tons of good movies, cartoons, games and music from that era for you to dig into. ) I watched the first TMNT movie again before I started work on this commission, and it was still surprisingly fun! If you don't mind some goofiness and 80s/90s aesthetics, you'll probably enjoy it.
