A long-awaited commission for Kaz of her minotaur character. We had been wanting and planning to work together for a while, but it took a long time for the pieces to fall into place-- to suss out exactly what the piece would be about, especially given how important the character has been to her over the years. In part, the character still holds an optimism and a hope in people and for the world which, in our modern real world, can be hard to hold on to.
In contrast with a lot of images of Kaz being fierce or wielding a weapon, I wanted to show her exhibiting hope and cultivation as an act of defiance. I was struck with a visual of her pouring her physical and emotional strength into the small gesture of plating a small plant. I wanted this seemingly simple task to be shown as taking a disproportionate amount of strength and spirit, strong arms taut with emotional involvement. I also searched to find a medicinal plant, so that there was an added layer of context, in the form of cultural knowledge which granted the plant itself an added layer of significance and value, but only because she carries that knowledge that was gained through her connections to other people. For the plant, I arrived at yellow dock-- here in the US, it grows as a weed, but can be used as a survival plant, both for food and various medicinal purposes, depending on the part of the plant used.
The pot which has carried the plant thus far in her journey, decorated with her cultural patterns, now lies broken. She no longer has that physical aid from her origins, and instead must manifest their knowledge and virtues within herself to make it the rest of the way on her journey. She will have to trust herself more than ever, and choose to embody the traits that she most cherishes to manifest them in the world.
There are a couple of prints of this piece still available in my store.

Sorry for the belated comment - Thank you again for all the work you put into this for me. It's beautiful - you got the details of her necklace and earcuff more accurately than any other artist, and the timely symbolism has really meant a lot to me during this time, bolstering hope and mood as well.
