Playing around with Photoshop 7, also tried to make the typical "lava-skin", where there are cracks/veins appearing to be like fiery substance underneath the skin, in the flesh. Of course I managed to fail on making it look like actual cracking, but in the end, the overall of the pics look turned out fine.

I know this is a bit late but, if you widen the center of each crack and make the run-offs smaller than the parent crack it should look like more of what you're aiming for.
On another note, it's probably that artist's eye that is causing you to dislike it. I love this here, it looks like he's taking in way too much power all at once and his skin is beginning to split open. Maybe you'd like to do a continuation where he's bigger and the cracks are more severe? You'd probly be better off using less cracks if you did cuz the crack systems would have merged as they got larger. oh oh! cracks love to form on stress points, i wouldn't know cuz i'm terribad at drawing anatomy but yeah.
Hope this didn't seem to obnoxious or confusing, just tryin to help! ^.=.^ ;
Good luck out there sir! *salutes*
