"My boy..." (DnD doodles)
Since the very beginning of our DnD campaign, we've been travelling with a caravan that...initially was a travelling menagerie. One of the folks in that caravan was a very commanding but kindly tabaxi chef with a southern accent named Ample Harvest. She has a very 'mother hen' air about her, and very quickly had Swindle wrapped around her finger. Out of character, we've been calling her "Cat Mom".
Cut to one REAL LIFE year later, and we're still travelling with the caravan. When Swindle died, Cat Mom cried for days and never left his side. Even when he was brought to the Shrine of Pharos, she stayed with him.
Ample almost (and should have) burned to death when Cinder arrived to undeath with a firey explosion. She and another beloved character (a cleric named Azalea) had been right next to him when his body literally exploded. Azalea protected Ample with her life.
Over the next day and a half, Ample was tended to by shrine clerics, and Cinder was-well, terrified. He loves cat mom so dearly, and she'd loved him too...and he almost destroyed her. Azalea's body had been unrecognizable...How could Ample *not* feel animosity for him after this? Or...at the very least, abject fear towards him. Cinder's emotional state for the next few days had been guilt and terror and terror and guilt. But, once Ample Harvest was on her feet again, she went looking for her boy, and found him.

yeah! Cinder's got...some big monumental struggles ahead as the fire in him will probably...slowly overpower him and his sensibilities. Which is something he's terrified of. He can feel fire's the clawing hunger and understands that, eventually, it will consume everything, and then it will consume him.
His humble little found family really does seem to love him, which is as surprising to him as his explosive initiation into undeath--and he's definitely going to be forced to retreat into that unconditional love of theirs, as the outside world shuns him. But--he's terrified for their future.

Swindle died kind of pathetically during an encounter against a...literal ball of blades--apparently named "The Angel of Blades"......it sucked lmao
The other characters, apparently, weren't ready to say farewell to him yet.
We had been on our way to a place called Pharos Shrine. It was the very first location of the entire campaign (where Swindle and Maxwell first met during their session 0 before meeting with the rest of the group in a nearby town in session 1). We were headed there because two very important NPCs who had been travelling with us were...uh..vegetative (one magically so via feeble mind and the other due to...blunt trauma) and we were headed to the shrine with hopes that a cleric friend we knew there (Azalea) would be able to do something to help them come back to their senses.
And...along the way, Swindle happened to bite the dust. So...maybe Azalea could fix him, too.
Except--in secret, our eladrin bard, Variel, cast speak with dead on him and one of her questions was if he wanted to be brought back. And his answer was a hissing "No/" So...that was that. No resurrection, just a proper burial...
They arrived to the shrine, and nothing was out of the ordinary there, except--Azalea let the party in on a fearsome little secret. Apparently, certain feats of magic that relied on prayer haven't been..."working" for about six months now... (mechanically, any cleric/paladin spell over 3rd level just--didn't work!). Prior to this, we already had found some knowledge about the planes being "closed off". So this appears to be...a consequence of that. (This was information imparted to us from a rather powerful Wizard whom our Warlock, Amity, was indebted to...this Wizard being the character who was currently...feeble minded rip).
Anyways, at this point, Variel hadn't told the rest of the group about her conversation with Swindle's corpse...so this was their first real taste of "shit, he isn't coming back". Everyone was exceptionally bummed out, and opted to distract themselves by running a few small errands for the shrine. On their return back from one such errand, two of the party members noticed a thick cloud of smoke wafting into the sky from the direction of the shrine. They booked it over there to find the whole place ablaze--and amidst the flames was Swindle (https://www.furaffinity.net/view/37389054/) who--as he walked, appeared to be ankle deep in some sort of murky water...though the water appeared almost illusionary and appeared only directly beneath his feet. He didn't seem to see or recognize the party at first, and--as he shambled past charred corpses of clergy and pilgrims, puddles of that same watery mirage would form around them, and these hideous uuuhh...writhing blobs of viscera emerged from them (https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EeEEXwl.....amp;name=large). Swindle/Cinder was trying to get through that door he's next to in that image, where Azalea's corpse was found enveloped around a mass of blankets that concealed a slightly dampened Cat Mom. And once he was let into that room, he slowly..."came to" awareness.
As for how...he ended up being explosively revived, this is what my DM had sent me: https://docs.google.com/document/d/.....it?usp=sharing
All I know aside from that is--the Feeble minded Wizard (who...while this was happening, succeeded on his intelligence saving throw on the 30 day mark after the spell was first cast--because there's only a 30% for him to fail and it was hilarious bad luck that he FAILED the saving throw when the spell was first cast on him) thinks that, provided the current situation between the planes, resurrection should be "impossible"...and is very curious to learn more about the circumstances surrounding Cinder's situation. So...BIG SHRUG LOL I guess we'll find out more as we go along, there's a lot to unpack!

Oooo. I like it. Its well written. Cryptic, but not so much that I cant understand what's going on. Gives just enough information to pull you in and keep you reading just for the small promise of possibly finding out more.
Sounds like its going to be interesting for Cinder then. At the very least though he still remembers "Cat Mom".
I take it you guys are still relatively low level if 3rd level spells arnt working in this setting?

Yeah, our DM is pretty phenomenal. The way everything ties together has been just so...consistently neat and tidy and just [[cheif kiss]].
We're level 8, currently!
Our party consists of a druid, bard, warlock, and paladin! The paladin doesn't have his 3rd level spells until next level... and the rest of us don't rely on extra planar sources for our magic ; v; I am very curious to see what DM has in mind, mechanically, for our Paladin once he's level 9....

From the sounds of it he's got things on the download. Y'all are lucky to know such a great dude! Honestly makes me jealous to have a campaign under a more experienced DM. XD
I'm rather surprised that a paladin and warlock can coexist in the same party.
Most of the parties I've been in have played their paladins as self-righteous pricks. Lol.

Haha maxwell is a very...zen sort. He's a big stone golem-y looking warforged who lost mobility in his legs after a historic battle at his shrine (Pharos), and over the 70 years that followed, had been religated to being a tourist attraction ("come see the Oracle of Pharos!! Receive his divine blessings! 5sp for adults, 3sp for children!")...That is...until Swindle showed up and restored function to his legs and then took off with him lmao
Max has never gotten properly mad at anyone over anything (including the halfling woman who "inherited" and exploited him and denied his personhood until the church forced her to recognize it)...he's a protector, but as long as you're not going out of your way to murder people or create abominations to do the murdering for you, Maxwell will get along.
Our warlock is a youngish human girl named amity who worked as a cleaning staff for a powerful wizard, snuck into his study and recited a spell from a booknof his that was open, and through that, met a strange dragon made of crystal who offered to let her go unharmed if she promised to take a piece of it with her. Amity herself is a bit of liar for sport (loves telling tall tales) and likes to get into scampy shenanigans--but she's a good person who is trying to be better. She and Max get along really well. A bit like siblings...

Hahahah that party dynamic is pretty adorable. Good to see a paladin played in a much more chill fashion. I feel like people see paladins and think they have to play them as hugely religious zealots Deus Vulting across the landscape and Divine Smiting the first sign of evil.
Oh fuck.
I just realized
Maxwell is...
The Iron Giant. 0.=.0
