Finally have a proper reference for one of my alien species in the Unsung Universe.
The individual at the bottom is showing off some "warm weather" fashion as well as a partially shaved style to their fur. Most Kagaran who live either most of their life in caves or in space tend to shave some or all of their "fur" short to help cut down on irritation from wearing tighter fitting clothes as well as dealing with most other species temperature controlled habitats
Fun fact before the blurb: A individual Kagaran is called a Krag!
~~~
Kagara, the home of Kagarans, is a planet -just- inside the habitable zone of their sun, and is covered in thick layers of ice, with occasional dots of super-heated vents that create pillars of liquid surrounded by spires of igneous rock. What isn't ice is sparsely "wooded" tundra protected by barren, cave filled mountains, which act as a wind barrier.
70% of all terrestrial species live in these vast cave systems or these valleys, most of which have co-opted fungal species that specialized in producing heat and/or producing light, creating various underground habitats.
Among both terrestrial and oceanic species are a clade of organisms that have co-opted a type of fungus that transmits "sense-memories", with Kagarans being one of the most notable.
Kagaran live in the largest of these cave systems, with society structured around communal groups of both related and unrelated individuals, with small groups traveling along the icy over-world for trade and travel. They also practice a form of cultural cannibalism that has been heavily influenced by both lack of resources through their history as well as their neuro-fungal network. The entire body is used, except for the head and part of the neck where the largest clump of this fungus resides; turning grave-yards into humid well lit organic memory banks.
