Fiiiiiiiiiiiinally finished it, kinda had it mostly done for a convention last month but then I didnt go, and since the tail was kinda thin, I unbraided it and basically made 2 more of the same tail and braided the 3 together, so its like... super fluffy 8D
Anyhow if anyone wants to know how its done, its a yarn tail... you tie bits of yarn to a braid of yarn and brush the living piss out of them... its super soft and cool (temperature-wise) to the touch... cannot stop running my fingers through it ;] Since its mostly fluff with just a central skeleton it feels more realistic than the stuffed pillow tails people make for fursuits.
I learned the technique from
bir (she sells them, go commission her) and
wolfacabra. The materials are dirt cheap but it took me I think like 100+ hours to make... its reeeally time intensive... I think I used like 5000 or so strands of yarn. Its about 2.5 feet long and about 6 inches wide at the middle. I put in orange and red for the fiery look and some black and cream colored strands for highlights.

I'm kinda late on this, but:
They don't get thin every time you brush them. xD You'd have to brush it for over 50 years like, ten times a day for it to get noticeably thin, I promise. Also, there are some yarn tails that don't need constant brushing. : 3
I remember giving Rander the instructions, and I remember mentioning to use a straight iron as well. If you do that, then the yarn comes out very nicely and doesn't matte. Also, the matte-level depends entirely on the brand of yarn that you use. ^_^

This tail is gorgeous, so you know. The yarn that's here in my area doesn't come in a rusty color, so it's been hard to make a really nice fox tail ;___; I"ve had to stick with bright red and red with brown. XD Anyway, a friend of mine found some interesting rust color, she has yet to show me the tail but I think it'll turn out nice. Wonderful wonderful job x3
Its so encouraging to hear you say that, thank you :]
The color I used most was Tangerine, though with bits of dark red and cream and orange to get a fiery look to it... I wanted a slightly stylized "fire fox" kind of look and not necessarily a realistic rusty brown
And I havent tried any straightening ironing or thrown it in the clothesdryer yet, I'll see if I can get more better pics after I do that
I already can think of several ways it could be improved, mainly by following your original advice more closely in ways I didn't realize exactly what you meant or why it was necessary in the beginning, but I think it came out well for a first time thing. I think the way to pack more strands on (and the way I'm guessing you do it) is to thread them through part of the braid instead of tying them around the whole thing.... and brushing before tying would make for less yarn material clogging up the braid.
