For those of you who don't know and/or remember (which is 99.999% of you), I once upon a time had a polar bear OC named Melvin.
Well I haven't drawn him in over 3 years, even though he's sort of an integral part of my characters' lore.
And SINCE he had a relationship with his adoptive son, Gilbert, I decided to make that relationship even stronger, and turn them into actual blood relatives.

Last year was Gilbert's year, so THIS year it'll be his grandfather's turn on the spotlight, so expect more stuff from this guy!

I'm gonna explain some of his lore too, so for those of you who're interested in it, here it goes!
I've only got bits and pieces, since he's not my MAIN character, but it should be good enough I think.

TL;DR: Mel never had a family, turned to demonic magic for comfort, and when Mel grew up and lost HIS family they grew feelings for each other and got together


Melvin's story begins with him figuring out his sexuality. He wasn't even married when he had his first and only child.
He found out he liked men way more than he liked girls, and even though they had baby boy, his girlfriend furiously kicked him out of her house and told him she never wanted to see him again.
He wished he could take care of his boy, but he respected his ex's wishes and backed away from his family.

Gilbert's disturbing, drama filled life pushed him towards seeking refuge in his studies.
He nearly went mad with grief, so he turned towards the dark, demonic arcane arts, going after myths and legends to scrounge up any piece of information, unearth any singular rune or symbol he could find.
And over the years, he found out more and more about the goings on of the Underworld, how to enter it, commune with its inhabitants and how to draw from their power, and how to use it himself.
He made a deal with a particular demon, who he then tricked and absorbed, vastly increasing his powers, at the cost of some of his mortality.
Half demon, he pursued happiness and peace in the dark arts, though that never fulfilled him.
Nevertheless, he managed to grab himself a comfortable job as an intellectual, a professor of dark ritual history at the biggest and most important college in the city.

Years later, many semi-successful guy only relationships and even more one off flings later, he found out his ex-wife passed away.
She'd been raising their son, Otis, on her own, and he was a grown man by the time they met again.
Otis hated Melvin deeply, for having abandoned his mother when he was but a few days old, and didnt want anything to do with the middle aged man either.
Melvin wanted to reconcile though, and extended his apologies to him.
They maintained tenuous ties, but ties nonetheless, like distant relatives or acquaintances.

A short time later, Otis also married, and started a family with a baby boy, who they named Gilbert.
Otis and his wife allowed Melvin to babysit and interact with the baby Gilbert, which Melvin was super grateful for, since they could start being a family hopefully.
Even though he never managed to settle down with anyone, he could at least ensure that his son and grandson could live happy lives.
They had a happy life. Gilbert grew up to be a brilliant engineer, and went off to college to hone his craft.

Until... an accident occurred. Melvin and his parents were together when the explosion happened.
Neither of them survived, and Melvin lost all of his limbs, and gained deep emotional scars, even his soul being scarred and changed, awakening something in him as well.
Since they were already close, having grown together, Melvin took care of Gilbert while he recovered and also helped him figure out his powers.
Gilbert build himself some mechanical limbs that now seamlessly replace his old ones, in parts thanks to his own skills, but also his new powers.
Some time later, Gilbert confessed his feelings for Melvin, and they've been together since!

As this chapter ends, Melvin and Gilbert befriended a small and nice rat named Neth.
