SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!
(its a review, you know this by now…)
What do you get when you cross San Francisco, the essence of dungeon men, teeth, fantasy, morality, and chaotic hectic life of man….in come cases a really weird adult work that someone felt that would make few people happy.
Instead today, we get something even better and worth while for two people willing to share a connection rather than develop into something for the sake of fanservice, and trust me….there is that if you look carefully.
Regardless, my names Crispy and here i am with another review, straight from the mind of a man seeking to explore into some nuances of creative thought and entitlement of expression, this is Dungeons and Dentists by Tricia Rose.
Now i wanna start off by saying, this comic is 100% sfw, and by all accountability, its a touching story to say the least on a fish out of water kind of escapade. What i wanna showcase is nothing short of a very lighthearted venture in a comedic and somewhat romantic in a platonic methodology. We start the story with someone named Sandra Smyles, basically your run of the mill dentist running her everyday life merely looking around the world around here only theres one thing different, knowing a hulkish green orc in her vicinity named Zhutric Th’ork.
What happens when you go to work, your getting ready to do some check ups on kids smiles, and you just happen to forget your second cup of coffee in an air of boredom that comes from antsy children needing distractions…..you get hulking 8ft tall greek skinned warrior from another world coming towards you, demanding you remove his tusks.
The comedy in this moment is what sets the tone for the whole comic, i know its gonna be short and sweet dependent on the chapters build and criteria made but when i see this essence of bolstering hulked body of a man coming barreling toward me demanding dental care is gonna earn a laugh, but then something else coming to mind. Zhutric’s character as a whole coming to light as we move forward into the storyline.
Now, personally we get the idea that sandra believes this is a cosplayer coming from a ren faire or something looking to maybe play around and enjoy his time while in costume. This charade works as Sandra is getting paid in gold (cash preferred but is still viable) and it comes to reality, these are real, and she's operating on a real orc….and falling in love with his tusks, calling them beautiful. What makes this more effluent is Zhutric reasoning behind all of this. He wishes to remove a part of himself due to the fear of humans.
To breakdown the character, Rik is by means something out of the ordinary of an orc, aside from the traditional bolstering warrior meant to dominate a world around him, he actually takes something more to heart in trying to take control of our realm, by being admired rather than feared. Seeing himself scaring humans seems to give him that essence he rather fit in as much as he can rather than simply breaking those barriers. The fact remains that despite being from another realm called Adura and was transfigured here by a wizard speaks more on him as a person than anything, being scared of people cowering from him in anticipation as well as noticing the attention that comes to be unwarranted by empty promises.
Sandra is a bit more of a loose case scenario, while she is a giddy and helpful person regardless of who comes through her door, and opens up to hearing someone out on their concerns and in retrospect it impacts heavily onto rik himself. He doesnt want this attention, hes thrown into a situation of modern society that comes to see him as the opposite of what he wished to be, a king or monarch of his land. Speaking highly on the matter of story, that the moral is grounded and very simple. Unwanted attention.
Rik is the kind of person who shows deeper thought in who he is, regardless of what comes his way, willing to break apart anything that may stand in his path of taking over the realm we reside in, but there is something elevated in that moment, his own self respect. We see in the short chapters that he is not happy being in the center of all the attention and even after departing with Vinny, a man that uses Rik strictly for the sake of getting further in life regardless of what rik feels, ignoring his needs and emotions. That is until blowing up at a premiere party and going straight up berserker fashion on the man. So much character dives into rik that shows hes far more human than one thinks, someone who wished for reverence only to see that he doesn't need the validation of a world under his command, rather just a hand to be by his side with someone he can trust.
The comic is very short but it manifests an idea that you dont need to follow social orders to benefit yourself, while i dont know if this is the lesson. I like to think that it might be a clear demographic towards social media and fame driven from looks. In fact beauty and oddities being regarded as something to post and get quick likes for the sake of approval. We see this in the final chapter that rik is unhappy through the end of the social montage of him in videos. We see that sandra misses him and thinks about him often always clinging to the magical speaker stone she kept on her, casually regarding that he left his equipment behind and needed to pick it up. The ending is very nice and touching giving an air of completion, not needing to venture further of what you wish to grasp but see what is in front of you being enough. Rik being content was something admirable and it shines a light on things regarding the characters.
As for the style, its pretty nice seeing the accent of the city manifested in the opening background giving the view of how big the world can really be, showing an air of supremacy trying to be invoked by Rik. the color and balance is flat so it corresponds less to time in uploading, a very clever shortcut that masks over uses of darkened red and black when portraying rik in a bolstering sense of domineering nature. I really appreciate the sentiment of showing the detail of the Golden Gate Bridge and the naming behind it was a nice clever annotation for readers.
As a side note, i recently am looking at the different iterations of orcs being portrayed by artists at least in comics. To those out there doing this and creating different facets of understanding for the sake of content creation, know full well that orcs are human inside, reflect that on society and the way their perceived. Through recent comics i seen, theres three dimensional characterization in many of them, especially in Rik, whom i would gladly put in my 10 ten protagonists lists. And also to Tricia Rose, please never stop creating more, you did wonderful in a short comic, that spoke a huge impact to those that read it.
interview
Question #1
What was your main source of inspiration regarding Dungeons and Dentists, or, how did the idea come to light for you?
The announcement of the Webtoon Short Story contest definitely inspired me to get this story out there! And honestly, if it wasn’t for the Covid19 lockdown, I don’t think I would’ve had the time to finish this story, or, I wouldn’t have been able to polish it as much as I was able to do.
The idea itself had been on the backburner from some time now, but I think it really came from the fact that orcs, as a fictional race, are so often seen with those large, bottom canines. So much emphasis is placed on that feature and the question asked itself, really, do they need a special dentist for those? They must take such good care of them! They’re just the coolest things.
DUNGEONS & DENTISTS was one of maybe five different ideas that I had for the contest, and I’m so happy that I went with it. I don’t think I would’ve had as much fun with the other ones.
Question #2
Will there be any expansion in the future regarding the world Rik came from, like a backstory or a spinoff with new locales and situations?
I can’t say for certain yet, but I do have so much of it thought out. I’d really like to explore the concept more… I think the dynamic between Rik and Sandy is interesting enough in and of itself, but to be able to introduce more of his origins, his friends, his enemies, like, how cool would that be! If not on Webtoon, then I’d like to be able to add to his story through my Patreon? Provided that I can do so. We’ll see! I’ll try to keep you updated.
Question #3
How did you find your set style for your comics and art, and what do you prefer to improve on in the future?
It wasn’t an easy style to find despite how simplistic it looks! Over years of disregarding art teachers’ opinions to knock it off with the anime, over years of self-teaching and study- this is the level that I’m at right now and I’m plenty happy with it. I think my style is friendly enough.
And of course, I could improve on everything. I think my expressions are fine as they are, but I should work on more dynamic poses and perspectives, and dare I say it, backgrounds. It’s something that I love about art in general, that there is always room to improve. That, a year from now, I can see the person I am today and say, “Hey! You’re getting there!” Does that make any sense? Maybe not, but it works for me. I would also like to improve on how I present significant events and character reactions.
Question #4
What is your thought process while doing comics and artwork regarding story and panel work getting everything together?
It starts out with the idea, I think. And from there, it turned into a “How can I make this idea stand out?”
A fantasy character in a modern setting has been done before, so how can I make my version stand out? I hope that, by choosing to draw Rik and his muscular, green self, as well as drawing the Golden Gate Bridge, helped my story to stay in your mind, as well as in the judges’ minds. I didn’t have to give Rik those tattoos, but I felt they were striking. I didn’t have to drive to San Francisco to get those reference pictures, but I felt I couldn’t possibly capture such a beautiful city off of google images alone.
If you believe in your story, you need to act like it. I believed that this story would entertain you, so I put in the extra effort to do so.
From there, I outlined a three-act structure, then zeroed in on the interactions. I wrote a script, I made a storyboard- I remade that storyboard entirely, and then I got to the digital work.
This is what I love to do.
Question #5
When drawing Dungeons and Dentists, did you ever feel like you crushed on Rik for being how he is, soft spoken and very bulky?
Oh, big time. I love giant, intense characters with a sensitive side. I think we need more of that!
Question #6
What advice would you give to artists growing in the art world and trying to branch out into doing their own creative works?
Creating DUNGEONS & DENTISTS was a huge struggle for me, because I had to learn how to branch out on the spot. 30% of the overall judgement had to do with audience participation and I did not have the following, at the start of it, to guarantee that I’d get a decent score. So, around March(?), I made an account squarely devoted to my idea, on Instagram and on Twitter. Then, I followed people who I thought might enjoy it and I thanked every person who followed me- until I couldn’t keep up, haha. I updated these accounts every day with art and did little giveaways when my follower count reached a certain number. I tagged as much as I could. I looked up the best times to post on certain days, because that’s a thing, apparently.
I made the day in which I would publish my story as definite as I could, so that my followers had something to look forward to.
I think what really helped me on Twitter though, was stumbling upon #orcs as a trending topic. If you can, please try to pay attention to, and take advantage of, any trends.I think that’ll help you much more than the social media algorithms.
With all of that technical stuff in mind, please make sure that you’re taking care of yourself. You don’t have to post everyday. Please keep your health and happiness in mind, because if you don’t, this thing that you love will turn into a parasite.
Question #7
Were there any major influences that aided in helping you go into art while growing up?
Anime and manga, of course. I know this is repeated time and time again, but it’s like that for a reason. It’s captivating. Growing up with shows like Case Closed, Inuyasha, or Naruto, was such an experience growing up. I think ultimately, that is what inspired me to tell stories at all .
However, it wasn’t anime or manga that influenced me to experiment with drawing different body types- that was something I had to figure out on my own. I’m happy that, instead of only thin, young, and athletic characters, I’m pouring more effort into appreciating more fat and curve. I don’t have anything against the thin, young, and athletic types, but if you want to expand your ability, please consider drawing other bodies. Please try to get out of your comfort zone. I’m still working on that, too.
Question #8
If you had to choose being in Rik’s world, what class of warrior would you be and why?
Berserker. I just love how like, wild and raw they’re supposed to be. And again, I just love the intensity. Just go mad. Treat yourself.
Question #9
What ideas come when doing your adoptables? Each one already seems to hold their own personality.
Aw, thank you so much for saying so! I think I just sort of withdrew into what I like drawing at the time. Big, colorful boys with a random expressions. Maybe they have horns or big teeth, I don’t know. Curly hair. It’s just such a fun exercise in general to draw characters that aren’t quite human.
Question #10
What are your plans for the future now that your comic is over?
If I’m able to, I would really love to continue making stories. It’s my most favorite thing in the world to do, and I couldn’t be more grateful that DUNGEONS & DENTISTS was so well received!
they were so grateful for the review i couldn't help but ask for an interview and they did this piece for me :D

It was a really nice comic, and I did love it too! Short it might have been, it was really nice! Once more we show that there are good stories out there, that they can be great, without having them to be "nsfw no matter what", ect.ect.
And I do agree with Tricia with what she said on question 4. You need to give a little something extra if you truly love your story and your work, to be able to justify it. As a fellow artist, I really do agree with that 100%.
Also, I would love to see more of your work if you decide to do something like a small series with those two, like knowing a bit more about Rik, like he start telling stories to Sandra about his world <XD. That would be lovely ^w^!
