Honestly, I was thinking of shaving down the fur on the sole, and painting on the toe and sole pads with liquid latex black paint. One thing about liquid latex, it's almost impossible to get out of porous cloth, as an example I have a 'work' towel which has been washed hundreds of times and still has latex spill stains. A couple layers of liquid latex might give it a more realistic look. If that doesn't work, I could still sew a felt fabric pad on over it.
The liquid latex sounds like a pretty good idea, but I've had some inconsistent results with other maker's hand poured paw pads. I've had the best luck re-purposing rubber from kick balls (or even old shoes) just because they are vulcanized, got a proper curing, and can endure getting walked on.
