This is the beginning of a project I've been considering starting for a while now! the concept is pretty simple. Take native birds from Minnesota (the ones I know) and made dragons based on them. These dragons have the same size, mannerisms, habitat, everything to the original bird, but they're dragons! Small ones!
So Here's the first one, the Cedar Waxwing.
About the Bird
Cedar Waxwings feed on berries and insects, but mostly berries. They're named for the red, waxy feathers on their wings, which no one is fully sure what purpose they serve. The feathers are legitimately waxy though, which is a feature only Cedar and Bohemian Waxwings have. The older the bird, the more they seem to have. These birds can be found mostly in open forests and shrub lands, often by open water or marshes, but will be found anywhere with plentiful berry bushes, where they swallow berries whole and can even hang upside down by their feet to get to their prize. They nest in trees, making cup shaped nests out of grass, small twigs and other materials they can get their beaks on, and then line the nest with finer materials such as moss, fur and very fine grass for warmth and comfort. Their eggs are blue with dark speckles.
About the Dragon
The dragon version still has pretty much all the same mannerisms and habitat as the bird, of course, however it sports a prehensile tail, which it uses to hang from branches much like the bird hangs from it's feet. The red waxy feather-like appendages that appear only on the edges of the bird's wings are visible along the dragon's front legs, head and all along it's wings. It is mostly feathered, but it's tail and the edges of it's wings are not, the wing edges are leathery, almost like bat wings, while the tail is covered in fine, smooth scales. Despite its body shape and assumed size from a photo or drawing, these guys are only about 6 inches long, just like their bird counterpart, and live a very similar life to the birds, and are small enough to be held in the hand of a human.
