The perks of being in a world security force

Josh and Niall conspiring to save her from the local government might strike you as a bit like he's taking the law into his own hands, but things are a little more complex than that.
Furrae is a fractured world of small nation-states with vastly different laws. Hayley's Clan is actively attacking Niall's, so he has a vested interest in placing her under their own protection... with the obvious option of handing her over for trial at a later date. Besides that, Niall is well-known for wanting to save 'Cubi criminals from the death penalty - had she merely faced jail, he might have just let things take their course and have a Daryil member question her in prison. Josh has a position of authority in a multinational security force so he has a certain amount of discretion when it comes to obeying local laws. All in all... it's a confused mess of conflicting interests.
