A friend of wanted at cover for his ensoniq keyboard/synth and I jumped on the project. If this goes Well I will Probably be building a few of these for my guitars as well.
This this is going to be solid as hell. We are using Deck screws as well as polyurethane glue for at the immobile joints and the sides are made of 1X6 pine The back is some crappy furniture the dude was trying to get rid of.

looks nice. Id recommend being careful using the pressboard (if thats what you are using from the "crappy furniture") because it tends to very quickly break down once it starts and is no good if it ever starts absorbing water. If it is solid wood, just ignore what i said above cause it looks pretty darn awesome and should work great!
Oh yeah, Its press board. He wanted to use that against my recommendation since he had some lying around. fiberboard is ok so long as you arnt:
screwing into it
getting it wet
gluing directly to it
putting lots of weight on it
using it to build furniture
or in fact anything of value
I also don't like working with it since the products used in that stuff are generally pretty F***ing toxic! It can contain anything from random bleaching agents to formaldehyde.
That being said, the deck screw/gorilla glue combo should be fairly effective. It took a few good minutes of wailing on it with a hammer to break the test joint we made that had only two screws and a 6X1" inch bonding area.

Yeah generally they aren't worth it unless you travel a lot. You can pick up a pretty stout gig bag for like $30 which is about what we spent building this one and its certainly less than I would charge for the labor of building one. That said, you can pull the guts out of a fender electric case and I imagine it would fit most keyboards. Those things are made of some pretty thick plywood and have been known to stand up to house fires. You could probably browse ebay and amazon and get one for like $50 or less used.
