The day had been slow and lazy, and Leith the Mini Cooper was feeling fed up. It felt like nothing had gone right that day. First, he hadn't been able to beat his time on the racecourse, then as he was playing with Sigrid, she had to leave early to help her owner with a job, and finally, his owner's children, Jackie and Lillie, had gone to sleep with a friend tonight, which meant they would be away until tomorrow.
However, he knew one friend that he could talk to, and as the orange hue of the evening sky cast down on the small town and county, Leith could be seen flat on his frames and lying next to a wooden post. This post was where Clayton's former owner, Derek, had planted a tree seed in his memory. While Clayton wasn't there "there", being at that s[pt made Leith feel as if he was with him at that moment.
"Hi, Clay'..." Leith slowly started. It was always a little difficult for the Cooper to start a conversation here, but he found his words and carried on. "Man, today just hasn't been my day. I wasn't able to beat my record, Sigrid ditched me early...and to kick me in the pistons, Lil' and Jackie have gone somewhere else for the night, and I was looking forward to playing with them. Heugh... It just...just hasn't felt my day."
He glanced at the wooden post in front of him, the memories of him and Clayton beginning to play in his mind. Though it had been a while since Clayton had passed, the little Cooper still felt a deep sadness within his engine whenever the Ford entered his mind. Clayton was practically the bestest friend he had ever had. It felt like he had been ripped away from him too soon. Slowly, a trickle of oil travelled down the Coopers bumper.
"Not a day goes by where I don't miss you... It...it feels like something isn't there... Something that...something that you...need...to keep going." said Leith quietly. "The others might have moved on and...accepted the future... But I don't know why it's so hard for me. Were we really that close...? Did we really have something special...? So special that...if you were gone...I'd feel empty? Oh, Clay', I don't know."
The front door of the house behind him opened and out stepped Derek on his way to the grocery store. He immediately spotted the Mini Cooper lying on his grass and went to meet him.
"You speakin' with him again?" He asked Leith.
"Yeah..." mumbled the Cooper quietly. He then whined and sighed deeply. "I don't know if I'll ever be able to move on from him. What if I spend the rest of my life just wallowing over someone who I know will never come back? It's just...so childish."
"It's not childish to feel sad for someone going away. Everyone gets sad when someone leaves them," said Derek. "Nothing is permanent in this universe. Everyone and everything has its time. For Clayton, his time came. As long as he...knew he was loved, and cared for by those closest to him, it'll make him feel a happy liver forever."
"I come here whenever I feel like talking to him," said Leith. "If I'm just not feeling right, or if none of the others are out, at least I have him..." He paused and glanced at the wooden post once more. "...To talk to. I know that he'll listen. I know that he'll understand me. He may not be here...here, but I can feel him when I'm at this spot. Can you feel him too?"
Derek glanced at Leith and gave him a happy smile. "I feel him too, Leith, I will always feel his presence. He'll always be there for us. He will always make sure that his friends are happy for as long as they live, and I think that in return...makes him a happy liver up there too."
The two living entities smiled at one another, and they both glanced at the wooden post. Leith felt better after his talk with Derek and coming to this spot. He knew as long as Clayton's spirit was still in their minds, they would all be happy for time to come.
