The mindset of your average Vanguard who aspires to the engineering caste is actually more than a little child-like in many respects. They are often very single-minded about their tasks and can be a little withdrawn and anti-social. Not all of them, of course...
But throw an engineer a complex technical or scientific challenge and they'll happily beaver away at it until fixed or solved almost to the exclusion of all else. In active combat situations they can make remarkably good tacticians, viewing a battle and the various logistics surrounding it as nothing more than a complex problem to be solved in the most elegant and efficient way possible (much to the annoyance of many warriors ).
This is not a specific scene from either of my two novels, but Attacks-First was the Vanguard I had in mind for it; he is the Vanguard that befriended Tainui on New Home, and later tried to rape him after getting his signals a little crossed. Poor Attacks-First, machines and electronics are much less stressful to deal with than other living entities...

Wow this one sure looks very amazing!
I also like the well worked idea of the engineers logical and really shows that you put so many details into their concept their idea.
This art surely gives a great impression with the lack of colours also hits a certain atmosphere :)))
I must say that the hired artist did a very amazing job both with the character and with the background. I could imagine this as a comic cover for a shorter little story from your novels it would fit it :)))

That's what I really respect in your works. That huge effort you placed in it, the details you gave to the characters, personalities and also their inner society and system.
So well worked and you can't pick up a single detail you would find irritating or wrong. Works very well and when I read I can see the scenes in front of my eyes as well.
The artist was able to bring the same feeling back I had in my mind with engineers you found the great artist for this conceptual piece!
I should thank you for your amazing story you create and share here with us :)))

I got some fantastic critiques from various people regarding that WIP guide document I wrote, which is really helping me to round out the universe and the characters. Has also given me some great storyline ideas for the third novel in the series I am working on Thank you for the kind words, it means a lot.
And yes, this piece really does evoke a feeling of what the engineer caste are often like as individuals.

Hmm that sounds great! So when I will be done with the current writings of your possible I will have new to read? Sounds good to me :D
Sometimes critique also helps my work when it is in wip stage once I call the work done I can't change mistakes any more nor that I want to work with something again I call done.
But all critique can help with my next work :)))

Heh, that's okay - it can be easily done And thank you for the great comments anyway though. The character is one of the alien species in the sci-fi series I am working on. Completed two books already and working (slowly) on a third.
The Vanguard are a fairly technologically advanced space-faring race that are as a whole fairly domineering and conquest oriented, but their civilisation is busy disintegrating due to civil war and the predations of a long-time enemy taking advantage of their weakness.

Heh, I have to admit that big brutish space beasties also do it for me and was a prime consideration in their design when writing about them Well, if you do eventually get around to reading any of my stuff I would love to hear what you thought of it. It's a little rough in spots but the basis is there at least.
Not many true sci-fi buffs out there - so many people are into their fantasy that the sci-fi stuff tends to be left behind a little. Solidarity, my friend!

Oh sure! It's a pair of robotic vocal chords.
I have the link posted on my profile. But, I'll link you to it anyway.

-) This picture is stunningly beautiful; the cold, grey, scene really is appealing. It's a good change from the misty industrials dungeons. There is something aesthetic about the hue of the room that I am really loving. The artists did a wonderful job with it.
-) I like the Vanguard most because he seemed incredibly unlaxed; almost confident in his endeavors. (Oh yeah, I used endeavors.) And, who does not love those shorts? If he's not solving problems he is creating trends I do say!

Firstly thanks so much for your wonderful comments Dunno about trend-setting, but in comfortable environments Vanguard would tend to wear as little as possible. Engineers are like kids with toys, their whole mind-set is centered around building, designing or fixing things... they get grumpy with the warriors for breaking weapons, vehicles, equipment, buildings etc, but secretly they love it, getting their hands dirty with *real* work while the warriors prance around with their pop-guns and medics get all touchy feely and crap like that The atmosphere in this picture is perfect... solitary engineer getting on with what needs to be done without any distractions or annoyances.
As for wall-paper - do you mean an image specifically designed for computer backgrounds?
Hadn't really considered it as I wouldn't have figured there would be all that much interest. Do you think there might be? If so, what sort of image?

-) I am not sure what sort of wallpaper would rock; in fact I think anything would be absolutely great. Yeah, I am a lot help. Personally, because I am a suck for intimacy, it would be cool to see a great picture of Blue-scales and his little one?
-) Warriors and their pop-guns; just like youngsters and them video-games. Real men play hopscotch!

Many hands make light work, as the ol' cliché goes
Good dancers? Not really - they are built for strength and speed, not so much grace and poise; music isn't really something that plays a big part in their society. But that is something I will be exploring a little bit in the third novel I'm writing at the moment.
So, perhaps i should commission a rave-Vanguard?

Then I have something in common with the Vanguard. Hurray! :D
I too lack grace and poise. Put me on a dance floor and I transform it to a battle field.
A rave-Vanguard would be interesting to see. Raving is mostly just about floating around surrounded by psychedelic lightning pulses and in the end you end up with someone who touches you in the special place. Do Vanguards like to be touched in the special place?

They do like being touched in the special place if you are initiating a sexual encounter or wanting to take one on in a fight - the difference is only in where you touch them but I shall not divulge either location
I look like a epileptic person with rabies being electrocuted on the dance floor. It is an abomination unto (insert deity of preference here).
Have you been touched in the special place?

My old neighbor lady always have to touch my arm when she talks to me. I would love to see her trying to talk to a Vanguard, maybe she would touch him in that place which triggers a fights? She wouldn't have lasted a second. She's only wrinkled skin and hair.
I get touched in the special place every day. Wait, what kind of special place are we talking about here?
And just as long as you don't hurt anyone on the dance floor then it's ok to dance like an electric chair victim. Just don't do like I did once, burrowing my finger deep into the eye of a big dyke.

Oh my, you got your finger stuck in a dyke? (the jokes just write themselves in this sort of situation don't they?) Did she take you outside and beat you to death with a tyre iron?
I do not dance in public. It is just not a done thing. I get drunk and boogey at home when my partner is out. Speaking of which, I have a desire to get blasted tonight. Bottoms up! (hurrrrrrr)
Vanguard have to eat hair - puts fibre in their diet... HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Nothing like a bunch of broken down equipment to make a Vanguard engineer happy for a while. Awesome look for Attacks-First, he has a nice solid looking body and I really like the look and design of his head.
Love the details of this, the cracked computer screen, the cracks in the walls, the wiring that is either in bundles or just loosely handing all over the place, even the way the pipes kind of have a very well worn look to them. As as was mentioned before the lack of colors does give it a very grimy and dirty feel to the room.

Come to think of it, it never even occurred to me that engineering would be so much easier a job to do with four hands, and maybe a wiggly tail to get into those tricky spots. It took me seeing his many hands dancing over the controls at the same time to finally realize that. *twonks head*
Your description is nearly as elegant as this illustration itself. And yes, I do use "elegant" to describe it, as, while the setting itself looks gritty, unkepmt, and possibly smelly, the sheer sheen of professional polish superboll put into this piece, between the intensely detailed strokes and the textures, gives it an artistic merit that can MINIMALLY be described as "elegant." :)
