Under Eden: Sanctuary Pg.1
Sanctuary Pg.1 β€πΉ
I'm stepping out of my comfort zone and making a comic! While I love writing, I've always wanted to tell a story visually even if it's just a few pages. I'm not super confident to be honest....wish me luck on finishing this x'D
The characters are my collie girl Aelinore and human Cross, the protagonists of my novel Under Eden. The comic shows a glimpse into Cross' mysterious past, a past he himself cannot fully recall. So while they are out in a market, he stumbles across a Lily of the Valley flower.
Why does the delicate flower invoke such distant memories and strange emotions...?

I'm not really good at the whole critic-using-good-critic-words thing, but I can definitely give it a go!!
* apologies this is so long omg end me lmao
I absolutely love how you've done the smaller panel in the top left, for one. The tilt as well as the laugh lines while most of it manages to stay inside the larger panel really makes it feel... still very much included in the scene? Like, it's something that's happening naturally within the scene rather that something that's happening outside of it. It also just has the feel that it's just kind of happily popping up from near her image. I don't remember what game had cutscenes that were in comic style, with panels that would pop up and disappear as needed, but it really reminds me of that, and it's something I genuinely love. I can almost hear the paper sound effect in my head, and while it's something that's very personal and specific to me it helps me immediately become immersed in the scene.
I also really adore how you blocked out (Is that the term?) the background for the main panel. The space is used a perfect amount, in my opinion; it's a background that tells the narrative without telling me outright. It's not super cluttered or anything, and has a lot of interesting things to catch the eye. It's also very... dynamic? It feels alive to me. Even though I can't see every single other person there, I can see enough to almost hear the gentle market sounds in my head.
I also absolutely adore how you shaded this. A lot of times when people make comics that aren't colored they forget that sometimes the shading can really muttle and eat up their linework, occasionally making certain angles and shapes hard to figure out or just plain unappealing to look at, but you haven't done that anywhere here. The whole image is very appealing; the nice lines and gentle shading almost makes it feel like.... a wedding card?
Like, I know that's kinda weird and very specific, but it's like. This whole panel just kind of gives me the appearance and feeling of a love letter to the two main characters, if that makes sense. (It probably doesn't XD)
Over all, I absolutely love this!! With just two panels I am immediately immersed, intrigued, and I want to learn more about these two charming characters! You definitely did an amazing job with this, and I can't wait for the next page!
Im just....so blown by this gracious comment ;; I am humbled and so flattered aaaaβ€β€β€
I love the wedding card analogy....I love using flowers to help tell the story, and in many of the pages flowers are used to convey the feel of the scene.
Im also so thankful you can tell from the pic the type of scene and narrative by just the elements in the market. Thank you so much for noticing all these little details β€
