If I read correctly, the real Illuminati organization was a short-lived late eighteenth century social club akin to the Freemasons.

My father is a freemason. It's an ex-secret-society. They used to do the whole secrecy thing - secret meetings in shadowy locations, secret codephrases and handshakes so they could identify each other, that sort of thing. And they used to wield a fair amount of influence in politics - they didn't rule the country, but they tried. That was a long time ago though. They still have a lot of 'open secrets' - rituals which members must swear never to reveal to outsiders on pain of torture. Rituals that are well-documented on the internet by now. The oath of secrecy is a relic from a time when it actually meant something.

Today they are just like any other exclusive social club: A private place where men can get together, collect some charity money, and hold events. There's still a lot of mutual assistance though: Many people have gotten a job or a promotion because their new boss is a mason, and a few words spoken at the lodge translate into a personal favor. They help each other out in that way.

I wonder when it actually stopped being a genuine secret society; several of our Founding Fathers were reportedly Freemasons.
