I love drawing these two so much, they are definitely my favorite Final Fantasy romance. I miss characters with depth to them, all the recent final fantasies only have WYSIWYG characters.
I stand firm in my position that IX was the last great Final Fantasy.

Exactly, everything seems to have started to go wrong right after squaresoft merged with enix. Ever since then it's some new battle system, or new ways level up with odd grids, and super-linear travel.
I want to see a final fantasy that finally comes back to its roots.

I felt the same way about the art at first, but some of my friends recommended that I play it, and when I did I realized that the story was moving and the characters were amazingly deep. I later began to fall in love with the very quirky and interesting art style, and the musical score became favorite of the entire series [sans that one area with the spider-like creatures that you have to ride on, I can't stand it...].

9 was my favorite, i fricking loved every single character, especially freya. and zidane. and vivi. oh everyone was so good... they werent typical characters, and while there was romance it wasnt stilted and predictable. SIGh i wanna play it again now

Yeah! I have to agree about everything said so far.
FF9 had a heart to it. I still think one of my favorites though was FF4 even if it was typical in some ways.
Still, it highlighted why some of the classic scenarios became the classics.
Let's see, in 9 I liked that the black mages were their own race and that Vivi and the other cognitive ones were trying to understand their existence. Freya's loss of Fratley and his return was intense since he had lost his memories of her. I could go on, but everyone has has played knows all this. It was a game to remember definitely.
Great rendition of the two, Kyle.

I'm not sure I agree completely. I did like FF X and X-2 (despite the heresy of making an actual sequel of a final fantasy...) But I agree FF IX was the prime of final fantasy. And I mean it as a fan who's played all the numbered ones...
So sad that they had to hurt everything so much to leave room for "pretty graphics and amazing sound".

Oh god, it makes me so happy to find another FF9 fan. It's so woefully underappreciated, which is all the more painful since it shouldn't be. The game has a great sense of humor, a gorgeous art design and a cast of quirky, lovable characters. Why does it constantly get pushed under the radar for yet another FF7 remake?
I love Freya. Not only was she a bit unconventional (an anthropomorphic rat with an occupation as a dragon knight, try and rehash that, Square), but she was just cool. Thoughtful, dedicated, and mature. Zidane has to be my number one favorite, though.

AS FOR THE ART. This is so simple and so good! I love the angular style mixed with the rough crosshatching. It rings of the series' signature aesthetic, while still having a sad, isolated overtone. Nice work.

Oh I know! I'm so pissed about the Square-Enix merger, ever since then, Final Fantasy has been atrocious, just a bunch of candy with no nutrition. FF9 was truly the last great Final Fantasy.
As for favorite characters, Freya and Steiner are mine, but really I love them all... Except for Kuja, he's a bastard.

I know you are not active in this place, but I do love the composition of this piece, the use of shadows that hide the character's faces, a feeling they're both distant of each other and the orange background that adds some tension, if not a kind of sorrow to the drawing. You are one of the very first artists that drew some amazing Burmecian stuff and I take your hat off because of that. Anyway, hope you're having a nice day!
