Commission for Windmill Slam Game's kickstarter project:
Sailors tell stories about young men that drift along the beaches and see beautiful girls bathing in the sea. At some point the man notices the girl’s seal skin, either drifting in the surf, or draped over some large rock. Stories like these usually proceed in one of two ways, either the observer manages to steal the skin from the selkie, or the selkie wrests the item free and escapes. Those that own the skin of the selkie own the creature herself. She will cry and beg, for without her skin she will be unable to return to her kin. Some of these selkies are coerced onto land, taken as so-called sea-wives by cruel or desperate men. Their story often has a tragic ending, when the girl manages to find the pelt and returns to the sea, sometimes after many years of marriage. Without a second thought she leaves her new family behind to return to her watery home. In rare cases the selkie takes pity or falls in love with her new spouse. These girls stay on land, sometimes for many years, and outlive their husband and offspring. Only when they have nothing left to lose, they once again don their pelts and go home.
