“Yesterday, a wolf stopped by my home and dropped off an old journal, asking me to place it in my hoard for safe keeping. He was an odd sort with fur that was the type of bright red I have only ever seen on dragon scales. He claimed that though I did not know him, he knew dragons and understood that I was one that hoarded books.
The journal itself is mostly written in dragonscript and follows the rambling of a treasure hunter in search of gold and gems. I could care less about any of that, but the last chapter is of particular interest. Oddly enough, it seems to have been written by a different paw than the rest of the journal. Shame the pages after it were all ripped out, I would have liked to know how it ended.
I have transcribed the entry to preserve it. There was a poorly drawn map inside as well which seems to be related to it, but I dare not claim that to be so until I have confirmed it myself. Tomorrow morning, I will set off by myself to find some answers and see if there is any truth to the journal.”
-Valia, the Moonseer
“Along my travels, I stumbled upon a map that claimed to lead to a treasure and I couldn’t resist following it to see what prize might await me. Call it dragon instincts or personal curiosity, but I simply couldn’t ignore such an opportunity.
Flight could only carry me so far along the way, and when my map directed me to a cave in a secluded mountain range, I had to turn to the oldest means of travel and the great frustration of dragonkind. Walking.
The cave was a strange place. There were these runes that began to glow along the walls once I had progressed pretty far along. The further I walked, the stronger the got. I’m not sure what to make of them, but they served as a useful guide until I saw a brighter light ahead of me. At first I thought it was daylight, but that didn’t make any sense. I was way too deep underground by that point…
I don’t remember much more from the walk, but during it my body seemed lighter and my steps became easier. I distinctly remember watching the runes pass by faster as I picked up the pace and I felt drawn toward what was waiting for me ahead. Somewhere there I fell into a run, which I something I’ve only done a clawfull of times in my long life. Our bodies are built for flying and climbing, not that unfortunate activity the wingless four-leggers are forced to rely on. That run was something though, easily the fastest I can ever recall moving on foot.
I didn’t have long to wait before finding the source of the light at that speed. The tunnel came to end, opening up into a space where the air was fresh and the light blinding. My senses told me that I had gotten turned around and ended up on the surface once more, but when my eyes adjusted an upward glance dispelled that thought. There was no sky above me, nor a single cloud. All I saw was the roof of a cavern larger than any I’d ever seen, and at its opposite end a light as bright as the sun would have been in the sky.
As amazing as that was, it was nothing compared to what else I found before me. This cavern was not stone and rock devoid of life. It was a thriving ecosystem full of life!
Trees, plants, animals…it was all here. All alive and thriving without any connection to the upper world. I still can’t even believe it even as I write this. The fresh scents wash over my senses. They’re familiar yet different, and for some reason every one down here feels sharper than anything I knew before. It is like my own senses have been enhanced by simply entering this place.
Many of the animals remind me of ones from the upper world, but they too are different, changed by isolated life in this hidden paradise. Others are a mystery, with appearances unlike anything I have ever seen.
I feel a new energy in me, like I have been reborn. This place has rejuvenated me unlike anything I have ever experienced before.”

It's no secret that I love pieces that show Valia in alternate forms. I also love surprises, thus I gave
plenty of freedom to come up with a design and it was fun to see the finished result. They have a really neat style for drawing wolves and it became a nice writing prompt for me.
Anyone know what the inspiration was for the background and writing? There are a few little easter eggs nodding to it in both.
I'm also curious, would you like see more of wolf Valia in the future?

Love the art and the story. Always love it when you have some kind of story to go along with these pieces. It helps to set the mood and gives an idea of what is going on and how it happened.
To be honest I did not expect a wolf form, but you turned out beautiful still in that form.

This one was fun to write. I was initially planning to go a different route by telling Valia's story instead of the other dragon's, but changed my mind since the original novel that inspired a few elements of it was all about following the lost writings of an adventurer.
Thank you, it's fun having a new form like this ^^
