I remember playing Quake multiplayer in school, back before the windows version of Quake was made, and we had like 12 people in a map not really intended for 12 people, and sometimes the game woudl glitch up and respawn people at the same respawn point and you would see

You speak from experience! Had the same problem with quake 3 arena back in the early 2000's. Some of the maps were too small for more than 8 players or so. The gore would eventually disappear after a certain amount of time, but sometimes it wasn't quick enough with those ancient video cards. Even worse, if the game host had set one of the command variables to immediate forced respawn if you died, you couldn't just linger in non-existence for any amount of time after you got fragged.
