Looks like someone finally got her summer phase fur. It's Majka, in case of any doubts. The arctic foxes' appearance can vary pretty dramatically between winter and summer, I guess that would lead to lots of visual identification problems. Such as, which kind of photo to put on a driver's licence? Probably they need both variants! On the other hand, having an arctic fox girlfriend would be like having two differently-looking girlfriends, depending on the season. ;)
Also, people's memory is so short. We haven't had a proper heatwave since June 2019. And as now, after very wet June and July, we got a "mini heat wave" with temperatures reaching 30 C in the shadow, everyone was so shocked and harrowed!... Except that in 2019, it could easily exceed 35 C and the hot June nights were offering no relief, in stark contrast to how things are now. When even I can handle, it is no heatwave at all. Amateurs...

It was peaking at 3400 MB here. I've got a decent GPU with 6 GB so it's still well in the safe range. But it's best not to fill it up to the limit or else crashes can happen. I guess the rest of my system is to blame, it's old.
One common mistake people seem to be making with fur is having too many strands. That's the biggest target for optimizing, the fewer strands you can get away with, the better. One needs to have "only" as many of them as to cover the skin sufficiently. So for example, I use a bit thicker strands than what would be 100% natural. I comb them relatively flat to the skin, so that a given area can be covered with fewer of them. Use more than one particle system, so that the amounts and densities can be set independently. And one very important thing, I vary the density using a vertex group.
This may be the biggest optimization of all, because of the undocumented way in which it works. It not only reduces density in areas painted with values less than one. It also redistributes hair from areas of lower weight to those with higher weight! So you can effectively transfer some density from a place which doesn't need that much (for me it tends to be the torso, especially back, the hips, and thighs, because they had the longest fur and thus the best covering) into places that need more. Such as hands and feet, with their very short fur.

Oops! It is fixed now. FA's species list is full of holes, I got used to setting "Vulpine (other)" for her. So this time I just saw some... other "other". And clicked mindlessly.
Her markings are technically still there, but they blend with the rest of the now-darkened fur so they might be bit hard to discern in this state. There may be an occasion to see more of her back soon, I saw one pretty piece of 19-th century artwork in which she'd fit really well...

Thank you!
One of the reasons I did not try summer phase on her more was that I was actually trying to avoid unrealistic switching back and forth. But here, with the summer theme, it was too hard to resist. And I'm glad I proceeded with this idea.
The fan is an "inside reference" to the 75-watt "monster" I got this summer. It doesn't look like the one in the picture, it's definitely bigger. And setting it to full power seems to threaten with raising a small tornado indoors! She wouldn't be able to lie, let alone sleep, with this thing so close to her head. Still, in the situation where air conditioning is very much not a thing here, it's my workspace's best defense against overheating.
