I agree with what you say that if you practice something wrong it sets you back But even if you dont have a "proper teacher" to show you how to do things, in this times around the internet there are a lot of amazing tutorials from artists that are wonderfully skilled that are very helpful when trying to improve your style =P. I for one never had an art teacher nor did I went to art school, everything Ive achieved in matters of art are years and years of practice, investigation and trial/error, checking tutorials, messing with art programs and the occasional advice from people that had some knowledge =P that is why I know that everything is achievable if you set your mind to it!

Mmhhh then why dont you try to see if there is an art school near where you live? if you learn better by physical teaching, then I think that is the best way to follow. Or ask if there are any artists willing to teach you in person that are near your place of living so you can pay for personal lessons?? That way you get the method that works for you and doesnt drain your wallet by travelling too far =P
