I advance to Fairy Tale Parade #6. Here, Walt Kelly illustrates the story of The Gingerbread Man; see page 27 of https://comicbookplus.com/?dlid=16822 to check my work. This is the first time I've tried drawing a flat character and boy, yeah, that's hard. I may have to do some more sketches to get a handle on how to present someone who's not got much of a third dimension.
As it happens I'm also listening to an audio book version of L Frank Baum's John Dough and the Cherub, a book belatedly roped into the Wizard of Oz universe, and starring a man made of living gingerbread. (Also Chick, a deliberately sex-ambiguous child.) But John Dough isn't flat.

Yeah; I had forgotten nearly all details of the original. Also I'm startled to learn that the fairy tale of The Gingerbread Man was only first recorded in print in 1875. That's centuries later than I would have imagined. There are a couple predecessors, although few seem to be written down from before the mid-19th century.
Anyway, Walt Kelly's version has a lot of the little bits of side business and general silliness that he was really good at. Really the more that these adaptations are Walt Kelly-ish the more fun they are.
