Yesterday my brother asked me how my "steampunk with dragons" story was coming along... xD Well, it's further than it was a while ago, so that's good I guess. And it's kind of sci-fi falls into steampunk because of circumstances sort of thing.
Gaia 5 is the world this boy is from. I'm going to write probably a lot about it, so if you don't want to read... er... then don't.
The basic idea is that a human colony ship that was traveling to a previously picked planet was damaged during travel, and unable to finish the flight. Things happened, the planet named Gaia 5 was found to be the most hospitable available planet that the ship could make it to, and that's where the human colony ship was forced to land. Electronics turned out to be unreliable on the surface, interference caused by large, strange deposits under the surface made them near impossible to use, and there was little iron ore to be found on the planet. Humans were forced to make use of lesser metals, and not to rely on electronic communication.
The large unknown deposits turned out to be large repositories of a fluid that was exuded by the planets creatures. The largest and most potent of these were repositories of the creatures the humans had begun to call 'dragons'. There were five distinct types of dragons, with lesser dragons appearing that seemed to be offshoots of the main five types. The world itself was populated by animals that were similar to the mammals of Earth, as well as bird-like creatures that were definitely related to the dragons, with proto-feather type body covering. All creatures on the planet contained, along with regular body fluids that were to be found in carbon-based lifeforms, another fluid that held what the humans could only call a magical property. For some creatures, it allowed them to teleport short distances. Others could use it to create small elemental disturbances, and others used it in certain rituals. This fluid gathered directly under the skin, covered by a clear, crystal-like covering.
The dragons of Gaia 5 contain the most of this fluid, and the fluid allows each type of dragon extreme elemental control, but only of one type. Sky Dragons like Blitz utilize the fluid to breathe lightning. As a dragon ages, more of the fluid-filled growths appear, allowing the dragon to use their breath weapon more often, but only when fully grown. Blitz has eight full grown 'spots', which allows him to cast eight full strength lightning bolts, or more softer ones. When the power of one spot is used up, he must rest for at least a few hours before the fluid is recharged. There is much speculation as to where the fluid regains its energy, but no one answer is definite.
The fluid repositories in the ground are utilized to power lamps, mechanical automatons, and other things that would normally be powered by electricity, but they do not allow for the kind of flexibility in usage that electricity does.
- In short, Blitz is a Sky dragon who breathes lightning. He is the mount of a dragon rider. The underside of Sky Dragon wings are slightly lighter than the upper side, with much lighter splotches that are meant to imitate clouds in the sky. For the most part Sky Dragons are different types of blue or green, but gray, black, yellow, and brownish sky dragons are occasionally seen. Orange, red, purple, and white sky dragons are unheard of, although it could be guessed that a random mutation can occur. Sky Dragons are easy going, and they spend most of their life on the wing.
I'm going to stop now before I REALLY start rambling. @__@ Wish me luck on the story!
