Oh no. No, he's quite serious. I did a bit of checking on him, and he's entirely serious, with several published papers, and co-authorships.

Insofar as his profession is concerned, he's exactly who he says he is.

As for his intelligence?

Intelligence is very nice, but lacking wisdom to go along with it means he does really stupid things. Like threatening to unleash biological weapons against a US city AND a nation that isn't known for it's sense of humor.

Now, as to whether or not he's actually working in the field of virology, that is very much an open question. Personally, I think he's unemployed. Such threats would no doubt jeopardize not only his employment, but also his security clearance.
