Now that the obligatory, unneeded, and annoying rant is out of the way... I totally understand that morning feeling.

I don't support smoking, I don't judge people for smoking though, as long they respect the public areas~ XD

I make him smoke because he needed a little bit of character development, in order to develop this character any further, I need to make him more "real", smoking is real (all this is thanks to a character development class I took).

Personally I think the people that rant about smoking are annoying as hell and the fact that so many characters don't smoke because of people ranting about it bugs me like crazy. We all know it's unhealthy already : P I was just trying to be humorous ^_^
