Right, he came in expecting scenes of mass death. Reaffirming suspicious/assumptions tends to put the mind more at ease, even if it's a very grim and bleak assumption, then a suddenly different and unexplained scenario. The unknown tends to often be scarier as your mind tried to fill in the gaps with limited information...and imagination.
