Bugsy Hornbill didn't just patronize the speakeasy, he owned it. He was the type of guy who always had a wink and a smile... *if* he was happy. And if Bugsy wadn't happy, ain't no one was happy.
The reason that art of this genre this doesn't get into hoity-toity galleries is that it'd need some esoteric meaning - like "it represents man's encroachment upon nature and the ensuing distress of the African Ground Hornbill." But really, I just wanted to draw a hornbill in a hat.

I love it! I love the little story about Bugsy too :3
And you're right about hoity toity art galleries.. They tend to be that. They have to be all symbolic or some such crap for them to be "worth" showing. It'd be definately worth putting up for the whole world to see up close though!

Thanks!
I was so mad when I went to the High Museum of Art in ATL and saw things on the walls that could have been done by elementary school students... this guy was labeled as America's best "self-taught" artist. He had no concept of anatomy, light, anything... it was stylized for sure, but not in a good way! How'd he get in a museum? He had a "deep" artist's statement. Blech.

You're welcome!
And that story is utterly sad D:
It's like on deviant art, all the Daily Deviations.
This one deviation got featured and it was the simplest, crappiest poem I've ever red about puking and then being asked for ones number.
But it was featured because of how *gasp* SHOCKINGLY BLUNT IT WAS! Omgz
And this one six year old got featured. And the only thing that made it decent in any way was a simple photoshop job done by his dad :/
They didn't even have deep statements to make. So very sad DD:

Yeah, it's amazing what gets featured and why. Mind boggling, even.
I often wonder which is worse - seeing bad art (IMO) featured, or seeing great art overlooked.
Still, each has its own community and fan base, but widespread recognition often seems like it has no rhyme or reason.
Shrug.

Knowing quite a few artists that have run successful galleries, I can assure you that this is totally false.
Lovely pic though. :)
