The plant that I thought was spearmint is called Lantana Camara. The article (with a real good picture) says the berries are poisonous when green and are supposedly poisonous when red, though people eat them.
The leaves are used to make a weak tea in the Caribbean to ease cold symptoms.

Wouldn’t surprise me at all, just like those Mayapples. If they are toxic in greater amounts, it’s nature's way of telling you not to eat them. Mint plants usually smell strongly of mint.
