Chronoperates is a strange little mammal from the Paleocene of North America. Once thought to be a late living non-mammalian cynodont, the truth is almost as impressive: it is a late surviving symmetrodont. Symmetrodonts are a group of non-therian mammals that include some of the smallest mammals of all time, and seem to have been obligate carnivores and insectivores much like eutriconodonts. Most symmetrodonts died out in the mid-Cretaceous, but North America housed the last representatives of this group, some Campanian specimens being contemporaries to well known dinosaurs like Albertosaurus. North America clearly kept on being a refuge for these mammals way after the KT event and the dominance of other groups like multituberculates, metatherians and eventually placentals.
