I LOVE this. It's short and dense and full of world. It hints at so much more, yet it is simplicity itself. It has the taste of aboriginals and generational wisdom.
But....
1) You said there is more of this story to come
2) The last line is "We were..."
You're fixin' to break my heart, aren't you?
Eh, that's fine. I'll survive.
ps "...thin high airs..." <---- I saw what you did there.

Oh, thank you so much! Yeah, I was going for a different style here, almost stream-of-consciousness, because it seemed to fit the ongoing mystery of the subject matter. I'm so happy that my intentions carried clearly to you!
Yes, there's more. This is just the introduction; the whole thing will probably be about 4k words once it's done. I'd meant to break my drought on the Thursday Prompt with something very short that I could post within the week itself, but ended up doing a full day of research, followed by a solid five hours of keyboard pounding. The wild New Guinea Highland Dogs, and their captive counterparts (New Guinea Singing Dogs) are possibly the most fascinating critters I've come across in a long, long time.
"...thin high airs..." - drat, I've been busted! But the wild dogs do live at 4,300m, so the description seemed justified :)
