(Edit as of January 7, 2011: I put this as my featured submission for a while in honor of the passing of Randomonlooker. As the description says, he wrote this melody and i did an improvisation on it, now it is extra special, because it was something I did through him, and I will keep this sacred now. This improvisation will be forever in honor of him. My thoughts will be with him and with Vera who lost someone she really loved.)
(Original description:)
This is an improvisation I did on a theme that
randomonlooker sent to me, so here is the final product, all made up as I went. I am back at the pipe organ at the Roman Catholic Church which is a far larger church, and with a lot more echo than the United Methodist one I used for the last two hymns I recorded, I realize now that the drop in quality is due to that, the microphone just picks up a lot of ambiental noises. I like this organ a lot better because of the acoustics but it is far more difficult to record. I may just have to record straight of the United Methodist church in the future.
Enjoy everyone! I will have more in the future.

The organ does actually sound a little nicer too, but I guess that you'll need some pretty good microphone (or multiple ones for that matter) to carry the effect over to the recording.
As for the improvisation, first I find it amazing that you managed to make a two bar motif become an eight minute piece.
And the way you cycle around registers is really nice, keeps everything really interesting! Which leads me to the question, how many manuals does this organ have, (or did you change stops throughout?)
And I really enjoyed the section from 3:40 to 4:20, the motif is so drowned out by the bass, but it still pushes through, of course I can't quite say I only liked one section, because I found the whole thing great. What's the name of the rank that comes in right after that at 4:25?
Thanks for improvizing on my theme, what you made is really wow! I hope you found the motif fun to play with~

This organ is much more spread out than the other one, its also like I said a MUCH larger church which creates a lot more reverberation inside, plus the organ was SPECIFICALLY designed for the acoustics of this church, as opposed to the other one that is about the same size, sounds beautiful also, but it seems like it was just kind of crammed into there. Again, because the other organ is in a smaller space that also makes it easier to record.
As for the manuals, there are only two which actually play three divisions: Swell, Great, and Antiphon, which I know seems confusing to think about but Antiphon basically shares with either of the two manuals. I was actually moving the stops around throughout the piece, a lot, I do this in all my improvisations.
At 4:25 the Trompette 8' from the Antiphon is playing.
and lastly I have a question for you. What is this theme? is it something you wrote?

I see what you mean, the other records nicely but doesn't sound right in vivo. But to really experience an organ you have to be there. I actually just played the university organ, it's nothing big (a "home" organ), quite a wonderful experience.
That does sound confusing, I guess I'll have to see the organ for myself to understand (what I get now is that you pull a stop and part of the manual becomes the Antiphon). Wonderful sound.
The theme, well yes I did write it (though I'm fairly sure I was influenced by something else, though subconsciously), it's the motif I used for a Ricerca alla Fantasia (which I wrote for guitar), I'm still practicing it though, and may upload it soon.
