When the three racers reached the final straight towards the finish line, they roared across it and then turned around so that they were facing the opposite way of the track. They stood and waited for Clayton to show up. Eventually, they saw the familiar sight of the Ford Wood Wagon approaching them.
“Looks like they’ve already finished!” He said to himself, panting a little after all the hard work he had done.
But as he started getting closer to the finish line, Cade, Zach and Julian, out of nowhere, began cheering and jumping up and down on the spot. Clayton was very confused as to why they were doing this strange activity. When he had crossed the finish line, horns erupted and tyres stamped as the three livers cheered and applauded for him.
“Well done, Clayton, you won the race!” Cade cheered.
“Aw, wicked! For your age, you did very well!” Zach yelped happily.
“But…but…y’all overtook me twice! Twice! Correct me if I’m wrong, but if another car overtakes you in a race, surely that vehicle is the leader now, not the other!” Clayton protested, who was quite confused at the celebration around him.
He glanced over at Julian, who in return winked at him by opening and closing his left headlight. Clayton then realised what was going on, and he shot a cheeky smirk to the Mazda. The group drove off the racecourse and then had a rest in the pit area.
“So, how was it, Clay’?” Cade asked the tired Wood Wagon. “First race in a long time for you, actually!” Clayton thought about being straight and telling them that he would never win a race, but he decided, in good faith, to play the game and pretend he had won the race. “I still have it, I still have it, I tell yer’!” He said triumphantly. “It’s just a shame…just a shame I’ll never be able to do such a thing again in my life.”
