All good things must come to an end.
With a heavy heart I must inform everyone that Pietro has passed away. I'd noticed a slight hibernation period with he and LB for about three or so days, so I upped their heating pad and misted them more than twice a day. Friday, LB emerged from sleep, sluggish but moving. Yesterday, I saw LB crawling around and being active.
Pietro was usually the first to emerge because LB is a very lazy snail. So I found it odd. I chalked it up to Pietro being groggy. This morning, I braved the tank because LB was still active and resting on their favorite stick. Pietro had not moved in over a week off the driftwood perch.
I misted him, waited. Touched his tail and he didn't retract - he was incredibly retracted into his shell about half an inch from the opening. Checked his slime (which was a florescent yellow, not clear) - I could not smell anything because of my sinuses/clogged nose, so I had to rely on other cues (and my cats effectively made the stank face when I asked for their help, so I know it was an unpleasant odor - and no I did not let them taste it or get close enough to smell intensely). No response, no movement. And after an hour, I knew he'd passed away sometime this week. Pietro was the smallest of the two, and I suspect was the one who laid the eggs. I do not think their body could handle more than one breeding, even though they were well for many weeks afterwards. I read that sometimes they pass away afterwards. I hadn't expected it, and I'm very saddened by our fragile little friend. I suspect he was already over a year old by his size. I had him for four wonderful months, he traveled from California in a tiny box and lived like a king. I'll miss you Pietro.
LB is grief eating. I'm grief coffee drinking after the process of removing Pietro from his shell (it was disgusting and I felt awful; he was most certainly deceased - I made absolutely sure of that before I started the process). But I wanted to save his shell and give him the peace of being laid to rest in my planter as a natural, beneficial growth agent for my bonsai. I think he'd have liked that instead of just weathering into nothing. He did pass away on a piece of driftwood after all.
Today is a sad day, but not an awful one. Be appreciative of the small things. Life is so short and fragile, but well worth living. 💜

I purchased mine from anna88auspicious on Ebay - they arrived a little worse for wear. But they were very healthy after I got them all misted and fed.
They were very active and healthy up until this month, I noticed they were a little sluggish but it'd been cold lately at night and in the house.
However, I did message that user inquiring about an order and received a response:

Hello and thanks for your interest in my snails. For shipping they are packed very carefully in a misted with filtered water plastic cup that has many breather holes. They are sent on their way with a snack salad in the cup which also aids as a cushion. Snails actually travel very well clinging onto the sides of the cup or the lettuce with their strong muscle foot. The cup is then packed in a well padded box.
4 to 5 gallon is a good over all size for a tank.
I have a special mix that I make from my organic compost. You can purchase substrate from your local pet store. Ask them what they recommend.
Their favorite foods are romaine lettuce,(favorite) zucchini squash, cucumber, radish greens, corn, celery, tomato, carrots, orange and banana peels (the inside lighter part) try different fresh vegies and fruit and see if they like it.
Remove any uneaten food before it starts to rot.
I don’t think your cat would scare the snails. Keep aquarium slightly moist……lightly mist maybe once a day with room temp filtered or bottled water. You could probably add some earth worms or pillbugs. You can plant some moss and grass. If you don’t want them to lay eggs then keep your soil/substrate level very shallow like no more than 1/8 to 1/4 inch as they like to bury down to lay their eggs.
Hope that helps you.
Regards, Agnes
Their message was very standard care and suggestions. However -
I'll avoid them in the future due to your warning, thank you for letting me know!
I thought about purchasing a milk snail as a companion for LB with Pietro passing like this.
I wonder if they'd get along though. I'm nervous, but I don't want him to be lonely. : (

I think he knows Pietro is gone. He's looking around when he's eating. I used to put them together on their meals and they'd eat together.
I don't know if they feel complex emotions like loneliness. But they were very social with each other (they originally didn't like one another very much, they kept to themselves!).
They only mated once and that was in early August. Afterwards, they were close until recently. When LB went into a little hibernation mode, I noticed they weren't sleeping together.
I wonder perhaps if Pietro knew he was passing away and wanted to be alone. Or perhaps I'm anthropomorphizing my snail friends too much.
If I get another, I'll let people know. I'm thinking about scouting in my snail populated compost garden (where I put expired veggies and such) next rain.
Perhaps I can find a local southern friend for LB instead. If not, I intend to get a milk snail from a respected ebay seller I've talked with someday. : )

I tried to give them both the best life they can have. They were so ideal they were comfortable mating, which means I did a good job of it!
It just saddens me because I know they're social and now LB is all alone in a 8x8x8 cube - sure there's enrichment from plants and obstacles of sticks.
But I'm sure he's going to get lonely. I'll miss Pietro, but I'll rest easy knowing he'll be a part of my plants for many years to come.

I had some garden snails in a terarrium for a while, they were so fun to watch! there were some rolly pollies in there too. One day there were a bunch of ITTY BITTY TEENY TINY snails! just out of nowhere! I didn't even see any eggs xD I ended up letting them back into the garden I got them from when I had to move. I'd love to start another one once I get an apartment situated c:
