All Critters are by birth are cursed with the potential of transforming into powerful monsters called “therians”. It’s widely believed that said circumstances for the transformation involve too many cardinal laws being broken such as killing and eating another critter, which is why they are strictly enforced in the first place.

Once turned, the monster corrupts a threshold of land with its musk and locks in anything that lives there. Outsiders, attracted by the sweet scent of the musk, may also wander into the trap. The monster then devours all figures of authority such as members of law enforcement and government, thereby taking full control over the surrounding area and its critter population. Residents are forced to prosper under the new rule of the therian, hoping in vain that they won’t be killed next.

A corrupted region can only ever be free again if the therian is defeated and liberated from its curse. However, it could always become corrupted again by a different individual. It’s also possible for multiple therians to claim a region at the same time, although it usually results in a fight to the death with only one coming out as victorious.
