weave(s):
European 6-1, Japanese 12-2
material(s)
brass, stainless steel
size
4 inches wide and an inch and a half tall.
This is most likely the most difficult piece I have ever made. And it been sitting on my desk with all my other sculptures and bragging pieces for like....half a year.
This is a basket woven from super tight and precise chainmaille. The basket combines european for the sides and japanese techniques for the bottom. The besket itself is firm and can even stand on its side and hold itself up. It is very strong and durable. It is about hand size.
The amount of precision required to make this basket was insane. Infact the doorway for the aspect ratio was so small that it would not have been possible if I had made the sides out of steel instead of brass. Even if they were the exact same mandrel and gauge and in almost every way the same size, the lack of springback alone would have made the weave impossible to weave. Think about that for a sec, that means that the differance of an aspect ratio of less .1 would have made this weave too tight to make....period.

Hm wow... The fact that if the rings were any smaller, at all, would make the weave impossible is a bit crazy. I was working on a ring of 6n1 using aluminum 18g 3/16, and i was able to make the ring in less than an hour. Seaming it together, basically putting in 3 more rings, took me two more hours in itself. I also recently made a small sheet of 6n1 with the same stuff, and if you hold it and keep it from bending along the seams, it cant bend against the grain it's that stiff. But congrats! Being a mailler myself, I know how frustrating things like this can be =P
