Honestly, I rarely use a blender at all. I find they work best on smooth surfaces with little tooth, like smooth bristol (which this was done on), marker paper or vellum, or even plain old printer paper! They have enough alcohol in them that, if you use a 'wet on wet' method, they blend fairly well on their own. Sometimes I use the Prismacolor brand blenders, but I almost always work colors back in over them.
