What? Do you really think it takes bravery to pet (no, lets say control) a creature, by using weapons and force. Because that's what humanity is counting for, otherwhise they are hopeless...
There is no courage in such actions, but i gues you are not smart enough to see that.°/
And about Toothless... He is more then happy to have a life in the "Hidden World" with his own family. Also enjoy to finally see that dragons have their freedom. But as I said, you are probably not bright enough to understand this.
Sure, Hiccup treated him well because he was sorry for what he did. And he brought peace among dragons and mankind. That was an honorable thing, I admit that. But even he understood, that dragons want to live their own life. So, he decided to give them their righteous freedom. Of course that was the only reasonable thing to do.

You are assuming they're not intelligent, just because you yourself are lacking a few braincells. Just because you're an idiot, doesn't mean they are.
That said, I don't really see what any of that has to do with wanting to pet the cute dragons. Unless you're version of petting is something different than mine, and if it is, feel free to share.
Meanwhile, these are intelligent creatures, and I'm not saying I wouldn't ask permission first. These two can talk after all(And according to Rescue Riders, so can the Dragons themselves, though in a different language, though to be fair, that is an alternate timeline...I think, the second season muddies the waters there).
Though, seriously, what does petting have to do with freedom? I mean it, what the fuck do you think petting is? I rub my hand over the side of their neck and scratch it. They don't have opposable digits, and their legs aren't structured right to get in some areas.
Also, to be blunt, the Riders are kind to every dragon that's non-hostile, and don't adopt them all, or even bring them back to The Edge/Berk/etc. Given your statements, you sound like one of the Clan Cats from Warriors, judging any Cat that had contact with humans as a Kittypet, even when the interaction ends with a few pets and some food, which Firestar lays out as just being friends.

Well, now I know that you don't know what petting means... You see, freedom is when you can do whatever you want, wherever you want to go, etc... (you get the idea, hopefuly)
And being a pet means, you are constanly under someones orders, which results in that you can not do whatever you want... Got that so far? But as I understood this right, you would like to have someones hand to rub over your neck and scratch it? Sounds like you are saying that this is all a pet needs. So, why don't you try it yourself and get someone to pet you!?
About the "How to train your Dragon" trilogy... It's just another statement to make people believe that they can pet every creature in the world. (fictionous or not)
Typical human evaluation how things should work. I'm not saying that I dislike those movies completely, because there is real friendship to be seen. (otherwhise it would be slavery, which would suit the human kind much more, tbh)
But who am I telling... Of all you have replied so far, it sounds that you would like to have someone to pet you. Since you like to be rubed and scratched. Or am I wrong?

HAHAHA!
You don't know what petting is. Okay, so you're not a native English speaker then.
Petting is the act of stroking the animal(Or person), usually starting somewhere around the head, and then working your way back. Sometimes with scratching thrown in to help soothe them.
It does not mean being made a pet.
I.E. Petting is what Hiccup does to Toothless after doing the face touching thing, and while he's scratching at his side before they find the dragon pressure point that makes him instantly fall asleep.

Yes I admit it, english is not my mother toung and I'm not a native english speaker.
So, I read a bit more into the whole "petting" stuff and it turns out, that it's not at all what I thought.
My deepest apology for being such a jerk. I now know what you mean and regret it for not researching this subject any further.
Still, I want you to understand that I defend my point of view when it comes to smother a creature in any way. Which was not the case here...
I did knew what to stroke an animal means, but I have never heared of using the term "petting" for caressing something/someone.
Once again I apologise for my behaviour.
Good night.

It's okay, English is not the easiest language when you don't grow up with it, I'm aware thanks to the net and several friends for whom it is a second language.
That said, I wouldn't try to hold them against their will, and in fact, if they tell me not to, I wouldn't touch them. And they could tell me, as they talk.
