Gah. I replied to this a few days back. But seems it didn't post up >.> My internet has been really rubbish this week. I apologize.
I use Cakewalk Music Creator LE. In the past I've used Cakewalk Pro 3 and Cakewalk Guitar Tracks (all of which are awesome). This version came with my microphone.
As for the harmonies... they sort of happen naturally. I record the guitar and the main vocals on the same track sometimes, depends. After that, I just sort of have a good idea of where to add harmonies. I guess it comes with some practice too. There are some general "rules" with some genres of music, pop songs usually have a single main vocal for the main melody for the first verse or so, then maybe additional harmonies/group vocals for a bridge and then full out chorus harmonies after that. Generally the last chorus is repeated twice or more and even more harmonies and additional dramatic climactic vocals as well.
I think I like to have a clean verse most of the time, add some harmonies, then keep those in the next verse then add more for the next chorus. It's just a case sometimes where I don't plan it. Well to be honest, a lot of the time I never plan anything. I am too rushed and too eager to get my ideas down. X3
Also not sure if you thought I didnt add the harmonies myself as in, I didnt sing them. I do sing them myself but in professional production it is possible that they simply change the pitch/key of the main vocals to be a harmony.
Hope I amde some sense, it's a bit of a difficult thing to explain X3
