Despite this being the point of WIPs, I still get that wave of dread
on the rare occurrences it's happened in my decade of doing and buying
commissions. :,D

This is such a mood. I get this all the time with comms I make. For some reason, even though the WIP is SUPPOSED to be the point of you making remarks to make the end-product better and do your character justice, you just feel like you're slapping the artist for their work so far....
Brains are weird man. o.o

Oof, this seems like a rare occurrence, because more often than not artists actually do get upset, to the point I always offer more money if I ask for fixes. Worse when you can tell they just glossed over your ref sheet! Sometimes makes you wish you had a simple boring character haha. Those who care and put effort in are gold and get repeat commissions
I'm not that nice myself but atleast I own my mistake and man up to fix it,
I've seen artists that would cast blame on the commissioner, or dismiss any claim that they missed up something, or act like the discussion is over when it's not or even speak to the commission in the most minimalistic way possible and sounding so monotone in their writing that it really feels they are treating you like a cash cow and not a person like "Move along, move aloooong" lol XD

These are all really good and good points...
as a commissioner I feel exactly this way! Even to this day... I see a WIPs if I see something wrong I really am greatly concerned speaking up if it's something minor, but sometimes even the minor stuff feels a bit major in the long run. I've slowly gotten better but I still feel horribly nervous asking for any changes.

Ah, this is good. XD
I find, as an artist, that people are often too shy to ask sometimes, or really timid when they do ask as if I'm gonna berate them for asking for changes -- and I certainly am not always aware enough to catch every single marking even while paying attention to a ref sheet so I definitely appreciate corrections that I've missed. You get into that art mode and sometimes gloss over something. I always wonder who people commissioned before me to be so beaten-down and afraid to ask. :)

Honestly....knowing that's how artists can feel is...REALLY comforting. 'Cause...yeah, as you must know, bringing it up is hella awkward, lol.
I had one really good artist completely botch the entire color of a character (literally ALL of his color) 'cause I thought they were asking for his eye color, but I guess they were asking for his markings. I use pencils primarily as my medium, including ref sheets (I'll use colored pencils, too, thus the confusion...I don't do everything gray-scale). I just let it slide instead of correcting them on the completely wrong colors, figuring I could get someone else to correct it if I wanted in the future, lol.

When artists send me their WIPs, I've hopefully already tried to gather if they're looking for approval to go with what they have, or if they're looking for "redlines".
Either way, I'm happy to let the artist have what they need to do the piece because some artists LOVE that I'll red-line markings and changes over the sketch they've sent because it takes out all of the ambiguity, and I've had artists dislike anything but "yeah, go with it".
Sometimes I miss and go the wrong way with an artist, but I almost always include "These are just suggestions. You are the artist. Do what you think looks best for your style" as long as they're not heinously out of touch with what I'm looking for. :)
