Just a quickie pen sketch I drew up the other night, originating from a phone conversation I was having with a friend; as is often the case, such conversations tend to get side-tracked, and somehow, we ended up laughing our asses off when picturing Penance in a "Punisher" t-shirt. I dunno why it was so funny (guess you had to be there), but she doesn't look too joyous in this picture. In retrospect, she came out looking kinda creepy. Which is okay, I guess. Suits her well, and all that.
Black technical pen on regular paper, 1 hour and 10 minutes completion time. Enjoy!

Kinda sorta, but not really. She's stuck in this form against her will. Her normal (natural) appearance can be seen in a few other sketches in the gallery.
The actual story with her in it runs 3 books (about 90 pages), so I hope I'll be able to squeeze all the background info and storyline details into that small number of pages. The story itself is pretty complex, and really doesn't focus around her (although she becomes a key player as the story winds on).

One of the benefits of being a demon is that one can bend the rules. A lot. There are instances in the story where only the victim sees her; she is not even noticed by other people. There's also a case where a camera fails to record her image. Lots of nifty paranormal shit like that.
I'm working on the Caterwaul cover now. Due to complications from a stent replacement surgery in late February, I ended up getting behind in my regular work. Now I'm busting my ass trying to produce new stuff for the current art season, as well as finish up the Caterwaul book. The website should be up sometime this summer, though I doubt I'll have much time to work on it before July or maybe August.
Yes. The full title is "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness". An image of them can be seen at http://www.flickr.com/photos/terrib.....7608807868480/ (if flickr allows external linking, that is.....)
No No No!! that was the wrong address, they were going for the Catholic priest down the street and didn't notice that my home is the old Church not the new one at 666 Seth st. and mine is 999 Anubis St.
I guess the Anubis alter threw them off a bit.
Mind you the life size anatomically correct living plush dolls of Val and the girls did get me into their "Person of interest book"
BTW is that good or bad???

I need you to send me a copy of the sketch with a white back ground, the guy at the t-shirt company Say's its too dark to put on black t-shirts and it will use up to much black for the white ones.
Oh yeah and he wants a letter from you that its OK to do this for you...something about copyrights and some other legal stuff like that, which I find kinda odd as the guys shop is in mainland China. He said something about "I know better to screw around with mr Hardiman...or something like that) I guess I should have gone with the Taiwan guy once again.
Any way if you hustle I'll have the Punisher/Penance t-shirts ready for AC 2110 or at least MFM 2110 at $25 a shirt you could make a couple of bucks.
So send the pick ASAP
Your pal Jimmie da Weasel

Haha, oh wow. You put Penance in a Punisher shirt. I don't know whether to laugh or be horrified.
Anyways, this piece has some really fantastic contrast. I really liked the way you showed white against a black background. that especially goes for Penance's form having the white outlines/highlights against the shadows, it almost looks like the negative of a regular black and white image and I think it's very effective at giving her a surreal or supernatural eeriness. Likewise I really like how intense her eyes look with the white irises against the black corneas.
I am really looking forward to Caterwaul. Considering how much art you've done of her, I was really surprised to see in the comments you said Penance wouldn't appear until the fourth issue. From the sound of things, do you already have the entire story planned out? I've seen the previews you've posted and I've caught different ideas from your comments and you really do seem to have a lot established about the world and how it and your characters work so it seems like you've got a goodly portion figured out already at least. I can't wait to see the stuff like that page with all the different species you mentioned.
And when it comes to Penance I'm actually really interested to see how you use her in the story. Here you've drawn the obvious parallel to Marvel's Punisher. Although he's ostensibly supposed to be a hero, he's murdered more people than most of the criminals he kills. Fiction does have a tendency to sympathize with frankly villainous characters. Furthermore some areas of modern work, particularly within the fandom, seem to be predisposed to casting demons in a positive light.
I guess like you said earlier I'll just have to be patience, but again I am really looking forward to Caterwaul.
Thanks again for sharing your work. I am very impressed you decided to do something so distinctive and moreover that you do it so well. Good luck with everything! ^^

Thanks! Yeah, I was going for a stark contrast thing with this picture, even though it's technically just a sketch.
As for Caterwaul, I have 12 issues written so far (four stories). Penance appears in the fourth story, which is right around issue 10. Over the past several years, I've worked on detailing the settings, characters, and societies of the Caterwaul/Skunkworks world, and I'm hoping it'll come through pretty well in the stories. It's more science-fiction than it is furry, despite the fact there are anthropomorphic characters in the stories.
The Penance character is actually pretty complex, and I was initially concerned whether or not I'd be able to get her whole story in just 3 issues. Oddly enough, the story doesn't necessarily focus on her; Caterwaul is actually pursuing an illegal porn ring, which happens to tie in with Penance's appearance. I won't say she's good or bad; she is what she is and I don't think she can actually have any sort of label or orientation applied to her. But there are certainly a lot of twists in that story, and numerous pivotal moments that will help the reader understand the Penance character.
Thanks for the good wishes! I hope to have the cover for issue one done this weekend...
