August Copper gazes out over the steppe on the eve of battle. He grips his lance on one hand, and his sword on the other. He is young, especially to join the ranks of a "brave man," and yet both weapons feel so natural in his hands, as though he'd held them a hundred times. Tomorrow he will wield them for the hundred and first as he fights the Sosso on behalf of his leader Sunjata, and something in his bones tell him that he will lead his men to victory. And that victory will lead to a new, quite literal golden age for his people.

So a little bit of an explanation for this one: August is basically the equivalent of an African knight. He's meant to be in the kingdom of Mali, which dominated West Africa from about the eleventh to thirteenth century with their gold and salt trade. They relied heavily on cavalry wearing either chain mail, or padded gambesons, like the one August is wearing.
