It's probably just easier to use the crystal instead of his own powers. If he were to divide his magics up among the 3 men to constantly grow them it could cause too much of a strain on him to do it strategically and it could possibly spoil the plan. I know sean grows people often but it's usually chaotic and not with a purpose in mind.
The crystal, however, is solely made for growing so growing the 3 guys giant sized very quickly would be right up it's alley.
Plus it's probably easier to coordinate as well
