Ah, the "fantasy but it's secretly Sci-Fi twist", a bit rarer of a twist.
Buuuut it's not as creative as people thing, sci-fi has basically replaced fantasy anyway since most people just do Swords and Horses fantasy anyway. You want people living in sentient buildings and casting pleasure spells to disable their opponents you gotta go to sci-fi now.

Alternate Theory: Yinglets have a hivemind that makes them more intelligent in large numbers and they were the advanced civilization that crashed, scattering them across the surface of the planet so badly they they're all too dumb now to regroup
This is why the leaders of large colonies seem so much more competent than the random yinglets running around in small groups.

I did a story once where they were smarter (and longer lived and less ADHD) with a small population of "defective" yinglets. But the defectives ones had an resistance to a nasty plague and ended up the total population. Kinda like Malaria and Sickle Cell Anemia to the Nth degree.
Ohhh... The rare kind of smart :o intelligent and curious but doesn't have the drive and connections or means to amount to much without outside interference. Reminds me of the only person to constantly exceed 300 in iq tests. He did very little with his life and did menial labour to pay for his lifestyle and wrote one or two books about his obscure hobby.
Having such a person come upon a opportunity to make a difference that actually interests them can lead to all kinds of awesome scenarios! I can't wait to see more of them 💓

The best part would be if they realized the Yinglet society fell apart not due to some calamity but just, like, a lack of road maintenance and their failing public educational system. Like, they just got too up their own asses politically to make sure basic necessities were being met and the society collapsed under the weight of dumb yings.
I figured as much. I'm very curious to see whether humans are as well, and also curious about the other various intelligent species here. For humans at least I'm almost certain they're originally non-native. After the most recent pages I'm also curious about the Baxxid, because they seem so different to everyone and everything else, but they also seem to have pretty sizable settlements and a a pretty well developed culture.
Thats some good questions to ask as well. And some good points made too. Even if we say nuked ourselves into oblivion, there would be things left, some of thoes things would last thousands and thousands of years. Heck, look at the roman roads, or the peramids, or other such things. Something would be left to be found.
Just so you know... I ended up making a Yinglet cleric in 5e. Cleric of "The God of shiny things", keeps forgetting the name of his god but loves him so damn much the god still bestows powers on the little idiot. The party has declared him the 'best thing ever' and once considered burning a city to the ground for not letting him in for being a yinglet.
So humans traveled to this world, brought stuff with them, but never made any major cities? Interesting. Must not have been enough people to form a self-sufficient civilization and after the generations they forgot where they came from.
At least, that's my guess. It's basically what happens to a lot in Stargate~

Well if there was indeed a golden age that also contained magic (which does seem hinted at) then likely the 'foot prints' they are looking for are in Extradimensional Spaces created by wizard / Craftsmen. I've always imagined there was a brave one that wandered out to go explore the 'savages that broke contact' likely due to a war I would think, likely from an aspect wizards overlooked in life that caused strife. That or it was so perfect living within these extradimensional cities it was a fight for some to get in and that caused the mishap that made them leave.
But picturing a wizard generations later coming to this world to see what had become of the 'savages' could be an interesting side story, better if they develop a desire to help as they fight the need to remain 'impartial'

That line of thinking sounds like how the use of causality is supposed to work without leaping to actually unfounded theories.
Also, I find it fascinating that either Ran has no concept of "normal", or that nothing to him comes off as abnormal. He has and can show empathy at the very least, but if he ever stops to think that what he does or strange might come off as odd to people, he doesn't show it.

I'm really starting to like Ran and this new guy. Humans don't really fit in with the local biology of this world and that nifty nebula in the night sky sure hints that it is a world way the heck away from Sol / Earth. I've been postulating a Human Colony that failed - technology loss and they have been reduced to that low tech society
I thought they hopped from rock to rock. Or maybe over rocks. Or maybe they WERE rocks that hopped. Or perhaps it was like stone soup, except with beer, and they were the ones that brought the hops? Or, I know! -They have nothing to do with rocks or hopping at all, they're just called that, and nobody has any idea why...
Don't mind me; I'm just gonna fave and reply to this page like it hasn't been a month since I last did that.
This reply isn't going to make sense to anyone just scanning through the comments, but that's because I talk directly to the author of the submission since they'll be notified of my comment. so he'll understand the context (assuming he remembers me), but now I'm just typing in third person to myself.
