It's Mauger! He's a big brown bear and Roland's common-law husband. Back when he was a young bear, a wizard cast Trans Your Gender on him as repayment for a debt, and he's never been happier.
Many would-be capturers tend to underestimate Mauger's cunning, assuming that Roland is the brains of their outfit and that Mauger must, therefore, be the dumb-as-a-brick muscle, but Mauger, like all bears, is thoughtful and intelligent, if incorrigibly blunt. He knows what he wants and sees little point in dilly-dallying when it comes to getting it.
Mauger favours his spiked club, but only for the convenience it provides. Make no mistake: he's just as dangerous unarmed.
