Yeah. It would've been worse to simply kill him off. But then again, he's rarely seen on screen due to not being a key character of the anime/manga.
Another thing to point out is how the english version, episode 21, after defeating royakan's large form he is never seen again or even mentioned until later on in the series to signify he was alive. The japanese cut version shows kagome taking the shards out of him as he reverts to his normal form, he thanks her and leaves happily. Why they didn't include that scene in the english version I have no idea. Time constraints? Making the episode short?
Honestly, underrated characters, specifically furry ones, are probably why the community clings onto them. They're so underrated that they are more likable and memorable.

i mean, even a furry bait fest as bna has an episode, the baseball game, which is basically about....killing animals. so, yeah, i stopped giving a damn about anything japanese with anthros long ago, not worth wasting my time with characters that die stupidly, kumatetsu, sajin komamura, leomon, jajuka, all anthros in hunter x hunter, igneel....makes no damn sense to even care. japan makes furry bait, and then kills them off. remember when gingitsune was about the animal spirits and then, all of a sudden, it became another boring shojo harem piece of crap?

as for the english version cut....if i tell you that it may have been because WOLVES ARE EVIL, AND HELPING ONE IS WRONG. cliche....would you believe me? cus, those episodes do not make the series longer enough as for being edited. so..yeah....the wolves trope strikes again.
Can't say I don't agree with you. Many furry characters I liked got severely nerfed, be them good or evil. At least, for me, there are a few anime and shows that has some great characters that are furries and don't die. But I can understand the frustration of every good anthropomorphic animal meeting their ends, some going way too soon. And yeah, the whole "We are wolves so we are evil by default" trope is very tiresome to see. Luckily, a few wolves haven't gone down that road yet. I will say that animes that have 12 episodes tends to keep furries alive near the end, probably having maybe one or two die heroically. IDK.
